Description:

Universitas Hospital is a tertiary facility and the only referral hospital for surgical and cardiac babies in the Free State and Northern Cape. In the face of very ill babies arriving at the NICU, Universitas sets the public sector golden standard for human milk banking in South Africa. The Hospital runs a large NICU and High Care Unit. Populated by patients that are often flown in from remote locations and arrive in the unit with severe existing infection. Donated Breastmilk makes a irreplaceable contribution to infection control standards in the unit. Tiny premature infants receiving this "golden feed" are protected from hospital born infections as the use of breastmilk protects the infants gut and builds the baby's immune systems. In so doing,it is lifesaving.The donated milk is fed to infants who do not have access to Mother-Own-Milk (MOM) as well as those that undergo extensive surgery. As Human milk is always sensitive and compatible to feeding the "just from surgery" gut of the infant.
